Session #3 -- In the Breathing Caverns

Cothon-Gadeed, Mother of Cities, draws all myriads to her bosom; slaves and citizens, metics and merchants, foreigners and chorites, all seeking the advancement that only The City can offer. From amongst these masses two fresh-faced characters step forth: Durham and Persephone. Both carry themselves as fighting-types, and seeing something familiar in each other, they agree to walk the city together, seeking potential adventure as a pair rather than alone.

They looked into two of the Four Taverns, the Herm & Stone and the Confraternity of Issa, before finally making their way to Cothon-Under-Star after hearing rumors of the Survivors of the Tel. Their quest for rumors was not in vain, as Avin of the Survivors was present and easily pointed out by others of the regular patrons (the scars on her cheeks would have given her away regardless). Though chary with details, she was able to corroborate the tale of her and her companions' escape from the Kzinti in the Necropolis of the Tel, and though Durham begged to see the strange mechanical bird Nassr, Avin did not quite agree, claiming truly that her companion Razo was still researching it.

Word had made the rounds throughout town that the tavern Kantor Kabljauhof is offering a bounty of 1000 gold pieces for anyone who brings to them (dead or alive) the "rogue alchemist" attempting to discover the secrets of Sakkra-blood potions outside the monopoly of the Kantor; the rumor is that he is holed up somewhere in the Ocean's Throat, a series of sea-caves riddling the cliffs to the north along the coast, just beyond the Migdol of the Dyers and Fish-Fermenters. Fixing themselves on the task of seeking out this "rogue alchemist", the three set out from the Gate of Fishermen and up the coast, leading a pair of hirelings from the hangers-on among the taverns ...

  • Durham (fighter 1)
    accompanied by Mad Matho (beggar)
  • Persephone (fighter 1)
  • Avin (magic-user 1)
accompanied by Vlana the Bard (magic-user 1)

These five all return, unscathed, and make their way to spend some coin in the guest-house of the Kantor Kabljauhof. Stacks of gold are counted out and divided; Mad Matho, clutching his broken boat-oar under one arm, reaches out a grubby hand for all 5 gold of his cut and a strange circlet of twisted wire, and then immediately capers off to spend hic coin, wearing his circlet like some kind of king-hobo, spinning yarns of descending into the caves, cooking stone-shelled crustaceans with fire-balls, and browbeating armies of servile dog-men.

Vlana, meanwhile, drinks her fill at the Kantor before wandering off to a drinking hall of lesser repute and running through several tables playing at tonk. She admits that her employers weren't able to claim the bounty, but otherwise she holds her tongue close, just as she does her cards, and walks away with a small amount of winnings.
