At the Ringing Anvil: Chromium, the King's Steel

[written up by Joel, player of Durham of the Ringing Anvil, expanding the scope of the setting--thanks, Joel!]

As the work on Fa Mei's magical khopesh sword is finished (project noted in the middle section here), it seems appropriate for the scribes to make an entry about this metal’s history, properties and where it could be found.

Chromium's first recorded appearance was roughly 250 lunar years ago, In a small city of the Vermilion Mountains, ruled then by Idris, first of his name. Located many leagues west of Cothon and Gadeed. A vein of the ore was found and smelted, producing orange colored ingots. After some experimentation by the King’s smiths it was discovered when forged with steel the metal itself took on a golden sheen and color.

King Idris ordered a sword made for himself and for his guard as protection of the mine fell to the king and his men. It is recorded that the warrior king’s weapon started to take on magical properties, shining light in dark caverns and warding away evil spirits. The popularity of chromium grew due to its ability to take on magical enchantment and the alloy became a status symbol within noble and wealthy circles. Decades passed and it was not uncommon for those of great wealth or social status to have some item forged with chromium, mostly weapons or armor, though not always the case. Many of these items were passed down through family lines, while others were lost in battles with Sro, demons, or in the wars of man. Chromium started to lose its glory after a few generations; rumors swirled that chromium magical items would lose the power they had by the time the grandchildren of the original owner inherited them; others simply state it was no longer the status symbol it once was.

The small city eventually became the great city Idris, one of the ten in the Ten Cities League. Those close to the royal family swear that there is a secret chamber where the sword of Idris the first is kept and that the sword itself speaks providing the wisdom and counsel of the former King. Such rumors aside, it is no secret that the city Idris has some of the best smiths in the known world and developed most of the techniques used for making chromium.

Chromium is almost exclusively forged with steel to give it maximum durability. Often the two metals will be layered on top of one another creating a pattern (damascus), which can be further manipulated to provide more unique patterns. After being forged this new alloy gains some new properties. First and foremost it makes the metal easily enchantable; it also allows the steel to be worked much more easily, removing problems such as shrinkage and porosity during the forging process. Pure chromium is a rare thing to see as it is brittle and likely to break.

Where can chromium be obtained? Idris of course is one such place, it is also said the far northern lands is another. There is unconfirmed rumor that the Fremen have access to chromium as well but most would rather believe that those barbarian tribes traded for it. The metal is more common than the fabled zortrium of legend so it would not surprise anyone if a merchant vessel had some to sell. An adventurer who is brave enough could very well come across some in the lair of a Sro or the tomb of a king.

Regarding Najm: Some Housekeeping

A few items of note that Najm ibn Marwan and crew have been up to in the last year.

In a recent session, which was actually backdated to the beginning of this lunar year, Najm transported a company of individuals to the city of Ittiyqa, some of whom would partake in the Zihuitlani Games there. Overcome by the glint of dinars, Najm allowed himself to be talked into supporting Gan ad-Din's entrance into the Games with 1000 dinars towards Gan's entrance fees--despite Najm's personal reservations about the nature of the Games. Once the Games began, he remembered his scruples and was sick with giving money toward them, even if Gan and his fellows were gracious victors.

Najm received 1080 dinars (so far) in return for his support. Remembering his scruples, he has devoted all of that money to charitable donations. Five hundred and twenty dinars (520) were spent on manumission for slaves from the slave market of Cothon. This would free 13 slave laborers, the worst-treated of all slaves; any with an inclination for work on ships would be invited to join his crews for pay.

The remaining five hundred and sixty (560) dinars would be spent in a great fish-and-crab feed at Fahra's Hole-in-the-Wall down in the harbor, for the poor especially, but not turning anyone away.

Both of these actions would have occurred some time in February, probably, after the return to Cothon from Ittiyqa.

In August, the keel was laid for Najm's new ship, the Rihha, a fast-sailing vessel, with financial help from Sesel and with a bronze figurehead cast in the image of a rihha-sro that Najm and company defeated some time ago in a strange place.

The Rihha was finished in October and has been undergoing her sea trials in the intervening months. She will be ready for a maiden voyage seeking the strange lost city of Babilar by next week, as noted in Najm's call to adventure. With two mates and two ships, it's time to promote one to captain of Saint Iskameen; and Najm has elected Alianor Drake as captain of the Saint Iskameen, while retaining Fa Mei as his own first mate on the Rihha. Allie (Alianor) is therefore free to choose her own first mate for her ship (still owned by Najm, of course).

Fa Mei is no doubt disappointed that she has not been selected as captain; as consolation for not getting her own ship, Najm suggests that she get a sword enchanted at the Ringing Anvil (for if she's his first mate, there will no doubt be adventures for her yet!).

Fa Mei has a chromium khopesh (damage 1d8+1), of which the metal chromium was noted by Durham as especially good for enchanting. Najm will pay 1500 dinars for the sword to be rehilted with something more distinctive of Fa Mei--she elects a basket hilt designed after a nautilus' shell, allowing her to strike with less worry over her own hand (+1 to hit).

And once the rehilting is finished, Fa Mei will have the sword enchanted at her own expense (2000 dinars) and with a Bani Dawr psioinc potion (given by Najm). Fa Mei has a high intelligence (15), and between that and the psionic potion, her sessions with Zaynab the Enchantress will focus on Fa Mei being able to predict an opponent's defensive moves, thus neutralizing the protective bonus of an opponent's shield or defensive technique (yes, Fa Mei has also heard of Sesel's famed ability to parry nearly anything!); i.e. it would become a Khopesh +1, negates shield OR defensive technique and allows the wielder to strike an opponent as if they have no shield, or as if they are not using a defensive technique.

[if this ability is too much, the Scribes allow that perhaps Fa Mei needs to have spent more, or to reword the enchantment of her sword]

It will be up to Durham and his Ringing Anvil to determine how much time this takes, from the first week of October (2023).

Najm has not been idle as he awaits his new ship being finished. He has been developing new spells, partially inspired by his reading of the Queen of Winds, and partially by his own calling of Saint Iskameen at the Battle of the Hastati Gate.

This involves the commission of an excellent new spellbook (scroll) of the finest hmelu parchment, inked with the finest inks from Heijo the Dyer's inkshop, and copying the ballad that Gan ad-Din penned, "Najm at the Hastati Gate" as well as some paeans and prayers to Saint Iskameen and her battle prowess and lance of lightning (a cost of 2500 dinars). It will contain the spells Call Lightning and Saint Iskameen's Might.

The details of the spells are being worked out, but the results of his researches are as follows:

For Call Lightning 5 tick track (beginning week ending 9/9 to week ending 10/7):

  1. 8 - success

  2. 9 - success

  3. 9 - success

  4. 7 - success

  5. 9 - success - 1500 dn altogether

For Saint Iskameen's Might 6 tick track (beginning week ending 10/14 to week ending 12/9):

  1. 6 – failure

  2. 11 – success 1

  3. 9 – success 2

  4. 10 – success 3

  5. 9 – success 4

  6. 6 – failure

  7. 8 – success 5

  8. 6 – failure

  9. 8 – success 6 – 2700 dn altogether

It has been noted that the second spell may be too weak as a fourth level spell, so negotiations over the particulars of that spell will continue, but Najm has successfully researched it, whatever the specifics, as well as having completed this spellbook, "Najm at the Hastati Gate".

Pako the Upstart and Durham the Dealmaker

While the scribes have taken a hiatus from their writing due to a suggestion from the oracle. Durham and Pako have been pursuing things of their own interest.

Many people of Cothan would say Pako has developed or grown over the past months, while still the loyal companion of Durham. However, he no longer carries himself as a humble servant with his head down in a bow. Now he walks like an officer of a noble house, head high, ears pointed up. Pako no longer looks the part of the humble servant either with his shimmering gray cloak and jet black leather armor decorated the Dlakolel mandibles and chitin, Zat-gun on his belt, two dagger like weapons called “Sai” and a fair length of Klackon silk rope.

Pako is still seen doing his everyday errands for Durham and the Ringing Anvil but often he is accompanied by one or two of the Wasgo elite, a group of Renyu Pako has taken great interest in. It is reported he has taken to training the Wasgo elite in the art of stealth, practicing this “ninjutsu” as Pako calls it. Rumors surround Pako and the Wasgo elite: some say they're part of a guild of thieves, while others say they are involved in something going on around Fort Bugeater.

Most evenings Pako is training with the Wasgo elite. However, there was one occasion where Pako was at a local tavern and a few patrons had a few words to say about Renyu that were very unpleasant. Before Durham could intercede on Pako’s behalf, two sai went flying, one hitting the bullseye of a dart board and the other landing just above the head one of the foul mouthed men. Pako locked eyes with the man, retrieved his weapon from his would be victim with a growl, then left. Durham pulled the other sai from the dart board and followed his friend.  That incident has labeled Pako an upstart in some social circles and stirred the embers of the anti-renyu sentiment that started months ago.

It is uncertain what will become of this rogue character Pako has become, but one thing is certain, he is more his own than the pet many thought before.

Meanwhile, Durham has been making the most of his Hannsman membership and status as wealthy adventurer and business holder. During the day Durham is often seen walking the markets eyeing what materials merchants may have to sell, as well as the blacksmith markets and the guild halls and conducting business at the Ringing Anvil in order to build strong business relations.

In the evening Durham is at one of the taverns of Cothan, usually the Kantor, building up his relationship with the Hanse. Buying rounds of drinks to win the hearts of the sailors and marines there, swapping stories with his friend Telman of Tsipa or hosting feasts to make new friends and strengthen bonds (with members of the Kantor and Hanse alike).

As for the Ringing Anvil, Durham hired a sage and merchant at the beginning of the year.  Since then rumors are that they are researching into the  "Blue Armor" like that which Sesel wears--how it is made and securing the material necessary to make it for themselves.

More Magic and Splendor at the Ringing Anvil

[written up by Joel for his character Durham's institution, the Ringing Anvil--thanks, Joel!]

the legendary warrior-boy sailing Dirac's Sea
Some updates concerning the Ringing Anvil, including the completion of certain wondrous items, as well as Durham's offering of a line of credit for those who wish to do business with him:

Najm's tunic

Najm ibn Toaz the blacksmith at the Ringing Anvil had partnered with Bartholomew Pettibone,

together with Bart's research and Najm's skill they produced a new way of working zortrium into a weaveable material. Najm used this new technique to make a tunic weaving in gold thread in a decorative knot pattern on the collar and cuffs of a green tunic. The design was inspired by the stories his grandmother told him as a child, of a warrior boy clad in green who saved the world from a great evil. While simple in its design, Najm hopes that its lightweight and durability will impress his judges, so he can claim the title of Mastersmith.

The Guild of Blacksmiths is considering this work as to whether it is indeed a masterwork such that Najm can be entered into the rolls as a Mastersmith.

Durham's belt

Durham has always lacked the great physical strength most fighters are known for. But since Zaynab's partnership with the Ringing Anvil, he has been tempted with making of what Zaynab call's a "belt of giant strength". This project started a while ago, not too long after the technique of woven zortrium came to the Ringing Anvil. Then Durham collected blood of a Dzor by brokering a deal with the Colossian Oracle. Now this "belt of Dzor strength" is complete, a wide belt of woven zortrium that buckles in the back, in front a plate of polished bronze treated black with the face of Dzor in front with three rubies for eyes and the beak of gold.

Lines of credit & Store credit

In order to make their services more accessible to adventures the Ringing Anvil has decided to allow line of credit to players, this credit can be used to make repairs to gear, commission items or engage the services of Audrey the Alchemist or Zaynab the Enchantress. One hundred dinars (100gp) per level is the standard rate the Ringing Anvil is offering, these rates could be negotiated higher, for valued customers and friends of Durham. This credit has no interest, but must be paid off by the end of the year (tax season), otherwise repercussions will be in order.

For example, a level 5 character could be extended 500gp worth of credit to use at the Ringing anvil.

In the same lane as improving relationships with adventures and to build up the inventory of materials, the Ringing Anvil is also offering store credit for any materials brought in and give 5% above value in store credit. These items can be a variety of things: teeth, hide, ore, bone and whatever could possibly be used by the Anvil.

Other improvements

As outlined in “Downtime for fun and profit” Durham has hired a merchant and researcher for the Ringing Anvil.

A reminder that the Ringing Anvil also offers alchemy and has adjusted its prices.

  • "Elixirs of Heroic Vigor" 200 gp per unit
    3 elixirs up for sale
  • "Yramrag's Perfect Antidote" 250 gp per unit, none currently available but could be commissioned

Magic and Splendor at the Ringing Anvil

[written by Joel, who plays Durham, proprietor of the Ringing Anvil; with certain adjustments and edits by the Scribes]

Durham’s personal time of late has been used to cultivate friendly business relationship with Zaynab the Enchantress, famous for her magical enchantments; she shaped the magic that allows Durham's magic hammer Sunforger to fly and is the creator of the obsidian feshenga that sold at auction. Durham has spent 2000 dinars to add an office for Zaynab and furnish it for her. This friendly partnership allows for the creation of magical items at the Ringing Anvil.

Najm ibn Toaz – Mastersmith?

Another development is Najm ibn Toaz, a blacksmith at the Ringing Anvil. Najm has crafted many fine and splendid items for Durham and others. His most recent work has been a great sword named Slayer by its new owner Lars Ghar-rider. Yet, despite being one of the experts in the Dual Cities in handling the legendary alloy zortrium, he has not officially earned the title of Mastersmith. Due to an old rule in the guild-book one must prove their mastery by crafting an item and presenting it to the guild as a gift. If accepted by the guild, the crafter is bestowed the title of master; otherwise the gift is returned, and no title bestowed.

Some mock this tradition calling it antiquated and an unnecessary tribute to the guild, others respect the extra effort seeing it as a mark of the person's character and craftsmanship.

Opinions of others aside, Najm has set his mind to the task. Durham, his armorer 'Annaz, and the other employees of the Ringing Anvil have given Najm their support, allowing Najm spend up to one thousand Dinars from the Anvil's coffers as well have access to some of the Anvil's stock of zortrium. And so the process of a splendid item begins, a familiar task for Najm--but will it be worthy of earning him a title of Mastersmith?

Splendor and Magic – Zaynab and Enchantment

The commissioning of splendid items is what the Ringing Anvil is all about, and these items are the first step in making one's own personal magical item (like Durham did with Sunforger). Now with the partnership of Zaynab the Enchantress, it is possible to commission magical items from the Ringing Anvil!

The process starts with making a splendid item. For the creation of this, the player-character will need a rare material (defined by the referee), an expert craftsman, and 1000 dinars (gp) OR 50*(base price of the item), whichever is greater. After an appropriate amount of time to craft it, the splendid item is complete, and it has all the normal properties as well as a bonus of some kind. For example if the item was a short sword it would still do 1d6 damage and may also have a +1 bonus to its damage OR +1 to its attack roll (not both), or may yet have some other non-magical property due to the material it's constructed from or its unique design.

A remarkable item is made by upgrading a splendid item. This is done by paying another 1000 dinars, plus 50*(item's base price) to have additional work done on the item. This work can vary from the addition of new materials, the addition of new art and ornamentation, or a significant change in the item's design. Once complete a remarkable item gains another bonus or feature to what it once had.

Improving upon a remarkable item is rare and usually done by mystic and magical means (or advanced technology). The Ringing Anvil is now capable of this process, in the realm of the mystical and magical through the aid of Zaynab the Enchantress, which requires and additional 2000 dinars (flat fee), a plan or idea presented to the Enchantress, and a number of sessions mystically attuning with the item, guided by Zaynab (at least three successful “spiritual exercise” downtime activities for a minor enchantment, or longer as negotiated between Zaynab and the character // the referee and player).

*non-magicial ability: a special property due to the construction or design of the item.

**Unique materials: can be special parts from monsters, a rare metal, etc.

***Additional work: something is added to the item in some meaningful way, perhaps another addition of a different unique material, gem or something changed/added to its design to make it even better than it was before.

Time: at least three successful downtime activities pursuing “spiritual exercise”, under the guidance of Zaynab the Enchantress

Special component: being able to set a magical ability takes time (usually a month's worth) and a component used to bond magical properties to the item.

All costs are subject to negotiation by Durham, as he is the proprietor of the establishment, and some requests may require extra time/labor or extensive use of the Ringing Anvil's resources, and these considerations could affect costs.

SOLD! The Auction at the Anvil

[written and organized by Joel, player of Durham (and Lars), in part for the sale of the zortrium throne recovered from the Sixth House of the Attine-Klackons--but also for everyone's fun and profit!]

Results of the Auction

Item #1 Sahulen plumes

The golden Plumes caught the attention of the traveling Sonneteers wishing to add the feathers to their act. They opened with the starting bid. However, Mara decided she must have one to decorate her wizard’s hat, bidding 150 dinars for one plume. Such a price was too high for the Sonneteers but they were able to win the remaining two plumes for 150 dinars.

SOLD! Mara wins! 1 Sahulen Plume for 150 DInars

Gan earns 300 Dinars for the sale

Item #2 Misrian wine

Bart’s Misrian Wine earned high interest from the Confraternity of “Issa, opening the bid 700 Dinars for all three amphorae. Once again Mara swooped with a counter bid for one amphora and a bidding war ensued ultimately working out to 300 Dinar bid from Mara for one jar, the Confraternity offered 600 for the remainder. The auctioneer asked if anyone would bid 1000 dinars for the set, no hands were raised. Therefore the pot was split accordingly.

SOLD! Mara wins! 1 amphora of wine for 300 Dinars

Bart earns 900 Dinars for the sale of the wine

Item#3 Mysterious scroll

A scroll of unknown history and origin was brought for sale by Durham. Sesel opened the bidding and went as high as 375 dinars, Heijo countered with 450 dinars, but a firm bid of 750 dinars was made by Avin.

SOLD! Avin wins the scroll!

Durham earns 750 Dinars for the sale of the scroll

Item#4 “Talking” plant

The bidding opened for the rumored talking plant with a bidding frenzy between Avin, Mara, Heijo and Sesel. The bidding built to 400 dinars then 450 from Heijo. Finally silencing his opponents with a winning bid of 600 dinars the plant was won by Sesel.

SOLD! Sesel wins the plant!

Item#5 Kantor tidal almanac & reef charts

It was a close contest between Najm and Sesel for the prized information. Sesel had thought he had won with a bid of 350 dinars only to be beaten by the determined Najm for 400 dinars.

SOLD! Najm wins the almanac & charts

Item #6 Palanquin

The palanquin built for two only attracted little attention from a few special parties. Zaida al Rashid and Baun Hanbal challenged each other for the palanquin. What Baun may have started with an opening bid of 300 Dinars, Zaida finished with a winning bid of 450 dinars.

SOLD! Zaida wins the Palanquin!

Item#7 Psilocybin spoon pipe & case

Tanit al Jamlia seemed interested in the pipe and began the bidding, going as high as 625 dinars, but Zaida flexed the wealth of her great house once more with a final bid of 750 dinars.

SOLD! Zaida wins the Pipe!

Item #8 Baliset

The nine string instrument caught mild interest from the Sonneteers who opened at 500 dinars.  Little did they know it was Durham’s favorite instrument he used to play at parties, during the lake races of his homeland. He must have it. Shouting the winning bid of 750 dinars.

SOLD! Durham wins the Baliset!

Item#9 Alchemy starter set

While Barabajagal had a great desire for the alchemy set, he must have been confused on exactly how an auction works, as one does not usually offer lower and lower bids (he rolled really bad). The auctioneer ignored him and awarded the alchemy set to Mara for 900 dinars

SOLD! Mara wins the Alchemy set!

Item#10 Herm & stone map

The well dressed Hlaf opened the bidding at 750 dinars, only to be immediately countered by Sesel’s winning bid of 1150 dinars.

SOLD! Sesel wins the map!

Item #11 Confraternity Alkari Amulet

Sesel opened the bidding at 1000 dinars but was overtaken by a 2000 Dinar bid from Lars Ghar-rider.

SOLD! Lars wins the Amulet

Item #12 Spitfire

While Bart began the bidding on the new weapon with1550 Dinar bid, the mysterious merchant known only as "the Collector” did not wish to let Spitfire go to anyone but himself, so with a winning bid of 2250 dinars he claimed his prize.

SOLD! The Collector wins Spitfire!

2250 Dinars goes to pay employees of the Ringing Anvil

Item #13 Map to the lair of the old pale worm

A treasure map being sold by the Heroic Companions of Hrrl-ra, it surprisingly received little interest from adventurers. Perhaps they are too afraid of the Serudla. But what has Arngeir to fear in his full-plate zortrium armor and black halberd by his side,it is rumored to once belong to a demon. Arngeir steals the bid away for 1600 dinars.

SOLD! Arngeir wins the Map!

Arngeir: 1600

Item #14 Zortrium Estoc & Parrying Dagger

The zortrium weapons gained no real interest. Karakt'katax, a fighting drone from the Fifth House seemed like the only one to bid on the set of weapons until Zaida joined in, ultimately winning with a bid of 2000 dinars.

SOLD! Zaida Wins the estoc & dagger!

Item #15 Obsidian Feshenga and black serpent ring

This exotic item was highly contested by many. Arngeir opened the bidding at 3000 dinars, Sesel raised to 3500 dinars, Lars and Heijo both declared 4000 dinars; but with a murderous gaze at her opponents Avin bid 5000 dinars. The auctioneer cried out 5000 going once... twice...

SOLD! Avin Wins the Feshenga & the ring!

Item#16 Zortrium throne

Now for the main event. The throne is placed on the stage a murmur goes through the crowd and the auctioneer gavel claps bring silence.

The starting bid is 7500 dinars--who will start us off?” says the auctioneer. A klackon hand raises first, “ the Klackons of the Xholda, bid 8000 dinars. Another voice cries out this time from a human in fine robes, “The Guild-Piedrejoya, bid 9000 dinars!” A man standing next to a palanquin responds “His royal highness, Prince Lu Kang, offers 10,000 dinars.” Then a yowl is heard and standing up from the crowd is a Kzinret. She roars out “11,000!” The foreign man known as the “Collector” sees the Kzinret make her bid and while he has been raising his hand to be recognized by the auctioneer, he seems to slump in his chair unwilling to bid further.

The representative from the Piedrejoya Guild shouts “12,000” with a look of determination on his face. It is also at this time a group from the noble house Barcidae lower their hands and walk away, not wishing to continue further. Before anyone can respond to the guildsman's bid, he says “Actually, make it 13,000 dinars." The mysterious Kzinret cries “14,000!” The Piedrejoya-man responds with a bid of 16,000 dinars. Notably the hands of the klackons and the prince are no longer being raised. “19,000” shouts the Kzinret, eyes locked on the merchant for a response. The man's eyes narrow, a moment passes, then he breaks his gaze away in defeat.

SOLD! the Mysterious Independent Kzinret Win the Zortrium throne!

Our heroes earn 19,000 dinars from the sale.

Let the Bidding Begin!

Auction at the Ringing Anvil

It has taken longer than expected to set up the auction, Durham has had many correspondence with many other buyers and sellers but the final day is here. Many have gathered from all corners of the surrounding area, the items are showcased one-by-one with the aid of the beautiful dancing girls of the Kantor and their details are spoken aloud by Durham. A bell is rung and a gavel claps, a moment of silence hangs between the spinning arms of the Ringing Anvil's windmill and the auction begins.
