Inquiry into the Affairs at Fort Bugeater

The Dual-Cities are ablaze with rumors after the most recent expedition of adventurers that have made the cities their home—ablaze with rumors that perhaps the Red Cloud has already been driven back, and his horde of Kzinti defeated!?

It would seem that Fort Bugeater—the fortress that in the last year has threatened the hinterlands of Cothon to the northeast (and most especially Alagadrein)—has been stormed, and its walls manned with the stalwart men-at-arms of General Dalinar's al Khalid household, subsequent to the actions of a select few in gaining a foothold within the fortress. Those few in particular were the Iqtadar Sesel, Hansemann Durham, Fa Min the Newcomer, and Najm the Fishmonger, as has been proudly proclaimed through the taverns already by Sesel in particular—though it is also known that Heijo the Dyer, Fa Mei, Raoden of Bob, Pako the Renegade Renyu, and Demitrytus were also a part of the company who sought to capture Fort Bugeater.

Great rewards had been in the offing for such great deeds, some from houses like al Othmani, others from the Souffets themselves. As the objects of the Othmani rewards were fairly straightforwardly accomplished, these will be paid out in full:

  • 5000 dinars offered for the destruction of the contraption blockading the river, and
  • 7000 dinars offered for the capture of the watchtower outpost

This comes out to a cut of:
  • 1714 dinars per player character (Sesel, Durham, Fa Min, Najm, Heijo)
  • 857 dinars and 5 dirhams per retainer (Fa Mei, Raoden, Pako, Demitrytus)

As for the Souffets' proffered rewards, however, the leaders of the cities wish to learn a little more before simply crediting these four with a full hundred and fifty thousand dinars (150,000!).

Iqtadar Sesel; Hansemann Durham; General Dalinar—consider this a summons to court!

Each of the three characters summoned is asked to produce their own testimony before the Souffets in the Court of the Moon, concerning what happened at Fort Bugeater and what has been done since to maintain it for the Cities. This testimony is also a chance for the characters to argue for their right to the reward proffered by the Souffets, perhaps by elucidating any plans they might have for the use of these funds, perhaps especially in the continued operation and maintenance of Fort Bugeater under the Souffets' command.

Essentially, this is a request for an expedition report and will provide 100 xp per level, as usual, but is a chance to provide especial rhetorical flourishes—which may also be appreciated by the Souffets themselves.

The summoned characters may additionally call others for supporting testimony.

Once all reports have been heard, the Souffets will consider all the information that has been provided as to their best path forward in regards to the reward of 150,000 dn to the "conquerors" of Fort Bugeater.

With House Othmani taking a lead role in local politics, the threat of attack and mayhem from the Red Cloud has become a rather more serious issue. Case in point, the Souffets, recognizing a rising problem in the eastern forests – namely, the upstart K'Zin Eater of Bugs, and his eponymous Fort – recently advertised significant rewards for proven actions taken against Eater of Bugs. In response, citizen Sesel, and several of his barbarian compatriots, undertook an expedition to accomplish certain of those tasks. Interestingly, it was also noted that Durham, of the Ringing Anvil, was approached by a member of the Confraternity of Saint Inistas who asked a boon of him … to seek out and rescue a member of their order who mysteriously disappeared during the sacking of Iqta' al Zaytun, believed to be held captive by Eater of Bugs.

And so Sesel and Durham, accompanied by Najm (the Wyrm), and the mendicant Fa Min, girded themselves for combat, and were observed heading in the direction of Fort Bugeater, in hopes of glory and gold! In short order, Wasgo runners, known associates of Durham, returned breathless to the dual cities, and petitioned House Othmani to send warriors to garrison the local watch tower. Not long after that, Sesel's wife, Zaida al Rashid, was observed escorting the mad wizard, Bartholomew Pettibone into the upper city, and attending an audience with Lord General Dalinar of House Khalid. Within hours of their meeting, a small force of men-at-arms from House Othmani, together with a rather large contingent of seasoned warriors wearing the livery of House Khalid, departed in the direction of Fort Bugeater. Whispers immediately began making the rounds, wondering what might be in the works! Had the hornet's nest been kicked? Had war begun in earnest?!

Early the following day, Sesel and his compatriots returned to Cothon-Gadeed, and tales of their expedition began circulating throughout the common houses of the city. As well, conflicting rumors began to be gossiped and bantered about within the major and minor Houses of the political elite. Of particular note, Sesel claimed great deeds were accomplished, indeed, the pesky watch tower, as well as Fort Bugeater had been successfully assailed and commandeered! Both martial posts had been routed and control ceded to House Othmani and House Khalid – who now garrisoned said positions, respectively. As well, two bedraggled, and beaten individuals, who had apparently been held as prisoners by Eater of Bugs, were returned to the city. One of these was Sister Kyssa, the initiate from the Confraternity of St. Inistas, who was met with great joy after Durham's rescue.

But something seemed amiss. This small band of barbarians, who were claiming great deeds, appeared to be entirely unscathed … whole, hale, and hearty … oddly perky and unperturbed for coming fresh from some adventuresome skirmish or hard-fought battle. What was observed to be a small group of four barbarians, seen heading out to the environs of Fort Bugeater, were claiming to have infiltrated and conquered a well-fortified military structure, garrisoned by a force of what was believed to be well over 150 highly trained and equipped K'zin warriors, men, and giants! And curiously, unconfirmed rumors suggested that the watch tower and fort had been found abandoned, with eerie tales of piles of headless, burned bodies within the confines of the fort's walls; the severed heads being found weighted down within the river, below the fort.

While there was some small comfort in knowing that the fort and its supporting watch tower were now under local control (no matter the cause), there have also been questions raised. What happened to cause Eater of Bugs and his force to be routed? Were they actually routed? Are disease and plague running rampant? Perhaps a new, unknown enemy is on the prowl? Is there an expanding presence of undead from Tsur al'Qadim? Was Eater of Bugs recalled to Red Cloud's main war group in preparation for a new, major offensive? The mystery is on the lips of many. And with these questions swirling about, the Souffets have sent for citizen Sesel and his compatriots to bring themselves before their most imminent persons, to provide a full and accurate account of their expedition, answer pertinent questions, and to perhaps receive promised rewards.

Renyu Reconnaissance

What Pako Saw!

Earlier in the year, Durham sent Pako, and a squad of the Wasgo Elite to conduct covert recon of Fort Bugeater and the surrounding area. In general, they were to stay hidden, gather information, and not engage in conflict. They were ordered to concentrate on the following efforts:

  1. Determining patrol timing/sizes/make-up/etc along the trails around the area of the fort.

  2. To set traps along the trails and making some general harassing actions.

  3. Learn what, if any, supplies or materials are being moved into and/or out of the fort.

After several weeks of loitering and sneaking about the surrounding area of Fort Bugeater, Pako returned to the Ringing Anvil and made the following detailed report to Durham (and Durham cried):

Concerning the Watch Tower:

To begin with, the watch tower, which had been destroyed, has been solidly rebuilt and re-garrisoned. Recall that the watch tower has a lower, stone structure (about 10 feet high), and the main watch platform is at an elevation of about 30 feet (and is made of stout timbers). There are three ladders leading between the ground and the lower stone structure to the upper platform. There is a cleared area surrounding the tower, out to about 100 feet. In the cleared area there are three equally spaced, stout poles, about 20 feet tall, containing what appears to be highly combustible material packed in metal baskets clustered about their tops. These poles form a triangle around the tower, and are about equal distant from each other, and equally distant from the tower and the edge of the clearing. Pako noted 2 ballistae present: one on the roof of the lower structure, and one on the upper platform.

At all times, there appears to be at least 12 individuals stationed at the watch tower. There never seems to be more than 3 K'Zin included in that squad, and they tend to act as officers, with one clearly being the “Top-Cat”. There are always 5 individuals performing watch-duty on the upper platform. The garrison is rotated out once every week to 10 days, and as they are rotated out, there is usually a day or two when the tower is “double garrisoned”.

Concerning Patrols and Mapping:

Pako and his team made an extensive map, of good quality, of the trail system that is being patrolled, and their relation to the river, the watch tower and Fort Bugeater. Durham has this map in his possession (I just haven't actually made one). In general, there are 5 paths leading to and from the watch tower area.

  1. There is the little used trail that is situated north – south, from the main road to the watch tower. It is roughly a mile in length (takes a human about half an hour to walk at a normal pace), due to the terrain. This trail, in particular, was never observed to be patrolled. All other trails show signs of constant, continued use.

  2. There is a short trail between the tower and the river (to the west of the tower). Pako estimated it would take a human about 5 to 10 minutes to walk this trail, one way, at a leisurely pace. At random times a group of 3 or 4 garrison troops go down to the river, for various reasons (washing, fishing, obtaining water, etc.). The troopers going to the river are usually gone for a few hours.

  3. There are 2 trails that, at first glance lead off to the northeast and southeast of the tower. These trails basically connect to form an extensive loop, winding along ridges and covering a fair bit of territory around the eastern flank of the tower, and of the fort. Pako estimated it would take a human about 4 hours to walk this loop. There are two other trails that lead off of this loop, that Pako's squad did not explore, one leading off to the northeast (to destinations unknown), and the other leading off toward the west. Because of the western trail's location and direction, Pako “suspects” it leads to Fort Bugeater, approaching it from a northern direction.

  4. There is a final trail that lies in a generally north – south orientation, and this trail leads directly to the confluence of a stream that flows from the northeast to the southwest into the main river. Recall that the river flows north to south in this area. This end of this trail is also at the foot of the rocky cliffs that make up the southeastern facing wall of Fort Bugeater. Basically, the course of the stream here falls along the rocky cliff base that makes up the southeastern wall of the fort.

  5. While scouting, Pako's spies set a number of traps to harass the Bugeater patrols. Upon later examination, most all of the traps had been tripped, but none of them seem to have produced any damage, or caused harm. And oddly, none of them were destroyed or dismantled … they were simply tripped and left alone.

As for patrols, Pako's squad has noted that there always seems to be a squad of at least 12 individuals, of a similar make-up as the watch tower garrison, moving along the trails. The renyu noted that there were usually 3 – 5 K'Zin present in these patrols. The patrols move randomly along the trail system, covering the loop trail, and the trail leading directly between the tower and the fort. The patrols move at a slow pace, and in a quiet, stealthy manner. The men of the patrol generally move along the main path, while the K'Zin tend to range ahead and to the sides as covert point guards, and they are difficult to discern. Several times, Pako's hidden renyu were almost walked over, unsuspected by both renyu and K'Zin! However, Pako's renyu are convinced that they were never spotted. Pako estimates that it takes the patrol about a day to move from the fort to the tower, and it takes another day to cover the loop trail in the eastern sector. While out on the trails, the patrol was never observed to camp out or build a cook fire. They always ended up either at the watch tower, or at Fort Bugeater.

Of special note, the patrol squads, the watch tower, and Fort Bugeater use a system of horn blasts to communicate basic intelligence among themselves. The system is not complicated, but the renyu are convinced that the “code” changes once in a while. Pako feels certain that particular blasts indicate:

  1. “Danger is nearby” or “danger is being investigated”

  2. Another indicates “danger has been engaged” or “Holy crap, we're in serious trouble!”

  3. While a third indicates “all clear”.

There seem to be other combinations of blasts, but Pako could not discern their meanings. However, Pako believes that, even when the code changes, he can tell with high certainty those three codes in particular.

Concerning Fort Bugeater and Supplies:

Pako is concerned. Very concerned.

A fairly detailed map of the Fort and its close surroundings were mapped. Durham has this map in his possession (see below).

Of particular interest the renyu noted the following:

  1. The fort is garrisoned at all times with at least 100 individuals.

  2. All of the garrison at the fort and the watch tower appear to be in good physical condition, well equipped, well trained, and have high morale. These folks, while being commanded by K'Zin, do not exhibit typical K'Zin clannish behavior. Everyone works together in a cooperative manner.

  3. The garrison seems to be comprised of about 60 humans, and at least 40 K'Zin … hardened K'Zin.

  4. Of the K'Zin, there are definitely 3 individuals who command more respect and fear, and they are easily identifiable. (One is certainly “Bugeater”, another has been called “Tracker”, and the third has been identified as “Mweep-Boss”.)

  5. Of the humans there are 2 who are given as much respect as the K'Zin leaders. And one has been observed to “manipulate the arcane” in fiery displays that rival Heijo, Lord Althis, and Bart.

  6. There is particular concern from the renyu due to at least 2 massively HUGE humans. These are thuggish creatures of extraordinary size (perhaps 20 ft tall at the shoulders), having ferocious rage and temperament, and emitting a foul odor (renyu could easily pick up their odor from a fair distance). These unnatural beasts do not tend to accompany patrols, but stay close to the fort. They seem to be aloof to all but the 2 identifiable men and 3 K'Zin commanders. Only 2 of these brutes were noted ... but, are there? ... all men-things look the same to Renyu. They wear armor (leathers of some such), and one wields a massive hammer, while the other a heavy metallic staff (sharply pointed on one end). Their reach is considerable.

  7. The various troops are well outfitted, wearing either chain or leather armor, and carrying shields. Various types of hand weapons were observed: hammers, battle axes, long swords, dirks, K'Zin wt'sai, etc. Also, Pako's renyu observed the garrison members training in firing drills, using slings. They were good.

  8. The fort is basically a triangular affair, situated upon a promontory overlooking the river to the west, an open cleared field to the north, and the forested/scrub stream area to the southeast-ish. The western, river-side cliffs are about 60 feet high (from river level to top of the fort's wall). The southeastern cliff wall is about 40 feet high (from stream level to top of the fort's wall). The northern wall (which has a recessed entrance at it's center) is about 10 feet high. At each of the three major corners there are massive mounds of rock that form “towers”. Upon the flat tops of each tower are 2 ballistae (similar to those of the watch tower), protected behind short, crenelated walls.

  9. In the open field there are two evenly spaced rows of stakes, running east – west. The stakes are about 2 feet tall, and have long wispy material (roughly 2 to 3 feet long) affixed to their tops. This material is seen to flutter about, even with the lightest of breezes. From what the renyu have seen of the men in sling practice, they believe these to be “range” (close and medium), and “windage” indicators.

  10. There is a contraption of 5 separate chains/ropes/logs that run across the river to individual dead-man mounds (which are on the bank opposite the fort). These lines can be raised and lowered in the water to block and interfere with river passage. These lines are manipulated by a block and tackle system, from within the confines of the fort. There is always a patrol-sized group of about 12 troops stationed on the dead-man side of the river, protecting that side of the contraption.

  11. In the open field, north of the northern wall, are 5 unnaturally situated mounds. One central mound, and 4 that are equally spaced, at cardinal points north, west, south, and east of the central mound. The mounds are about 15 feet in diameter, about 5 feet tall at their center, and are covered in scrubby grasses – they do not appear to be recently made, or even disturbed. Oddly, the renyu spies note that these mounds are never approached by anyone from the fort – they are given a wide berth.

  12. Two special occurrences were noted by the renyu, concerning “supplies” being delivered to the fort. The first involved a small caravan of 4 covered wagons, with human merchants/guards, delivering material to the fort. This caravan was fairly well guarded. The renyu thought that the main merchant was familiar and has been seen in Cothon-Gadeed, but he could not be identified. However, Pako and others are certain that if they saw the man again, they would recognize him. The renyu also report that the aroma of freshly butchered meat, and newly forged and oiled metals could be smelled as the caravan passed near their positions. The second occurrence was a “visit” by none other than Red Cloud, a retinue of at least 20 battle-hardened K'Zin warriors … and a human. The renyu observed this group enter the fort with great fanfare and respect, stay briefly over a 2 day period, then depart, heading in an east by southeast direction – in the general direction of Cothon-Gadeed. Red Cloud (or who they took to be Red Cloud) was quite large for a K'Zin, as were most of his retinue. The renyu agreed that if they were to be forced into an encounter with Red Cloud, even by himself, they would (as a group) retreat before him. He was formidable in appearance and stature. Interestingly, the human seemed to be almost an equal (if only slightly subservient) to Red Cloud. The appearance of Red Cloud elicited great joy and excitement from the garrison at the fort, and boosted morale significantly. Eater of Bugs greeted Red Cloud as a younger brother might greet a respected, elder brother – the two appeared to be long-time “friends”, sharing a mutual respect.

Thus ends Pako's report.

A crude map of Fort Bugeater follows.

Key:

  1. Greenish area is lightly wooded, with signs of some cutting of trees.

  2. Orange area is the level cobble/beach on the western shore of the river, where the dead-man mounds are located.

  3. Grey-ish blobs appear to be intensely burned patches of ground.

  4. Heavy, dark arrows indicate direction of river and stream flow.

  5. Red squares indicate massive lean-to structures used by the brutish giants.

  6. Dotted lines across the river indicate the river-travel blocking chains.

  7. Irregular hatch-marked areas are the main walls of Fort Bugeater.

  8. Squares with red hatching are the ballistae mound/towers.

  9. Irregular slashed areas indicate natural cliffs.

  10. Yellow circles indicate the undisturbed “mounds”.

  11. Items within the confines of the fort indicate various buildings or large wall tents.

Session #92: Stirring the Pot

and the Demise of Riit Rakir

Following up on a recent call to arms, a company of barbarians gathered to take the new Souffets up on their offer of rewards for those willing to sneak their way into the Kzin Moot outside the Necropolis, and there learn what they may of the Red Cloud, the dispositions of the various Kzinti clans and their leaders, and perhaps even to capture some one for interrogation.

Bartholomew Pettibone and Iqtadar Sesel were eager to pursue this goal, joined just as eagerly by Avin, Durham, and Heijo. After signaling their intent to the Souffets, they received basic information about the proposed rewards: 250 dinars for rumors that could be followed up with, and 1000 dinars for any hard piece of evidence regarding the Red Cloud's plans, or a captive.

Finding the rewards agreeable, the company discussed just how to infiltrate the Moot for sometime, and finally agreed on the idea that they would hire Riit Rakir to pose as their "owner" and just have him, being a Kzin, lead them around the camp. Unfortunately, this proved more complicated than foreseen: Rakir was found drunk in a dive of a bar, hissing and spitting into his wine.

Upon being questioned, Rakir claimed that he should be a warleader amongst the Moot, but that he was an outcast, driven off after a failure to keep his position with a challenge of strength. Now Wtsai-Breaker was chief of the clan Rakir claimed should be his ... the company, being committed to their plan, invited Rakir to join them for a chance to seize the clan for himself. Drunk and angry, Rakir did the Kzin-thing and screamed and leapt at the chance ...

The group headed east out of the Gate of Mourners shortly thereafter:

  • Heijo (magic-user 6)
    "hired" Riit Rakir (Kzin)
  • Sesel (fighting-man 8)
    accompanied by Raoden (magic-user 5)
  • Avin (magic-user 6)
  • Bartholomew Pettibone (magic-user 9)
    accompanied by Gan ad-Din (fighting-man 6) and HanaĂ¯s (companion)
  • Durham (fighting-man 8)
    accompanied by Pako (renyu)

After a confusing night, the company eventually returned to Cothon-Gadeed, minus one Riit Rakir, but plus a different Kzin, later identified as Chanter-Khym. For this prisoner, the company was able to claim 1000 dinars in reward, and they were able to relate certain other rumors that fetch several hundred more gold pieces.

Pako was not with the company much of the time, sent as he was as a scout/spy through the huge camp, made invisible by a cloak of the mystical threads of magic. "Very smelly," he explains, wrinkling his canine nose over a mug of beer to those who plug him for the tale. "Many Kzin, all close, they stink, spray all over, claim this, reject that. Many men too, and many beasts, and all of them, eh ... make dung. Saw Kzin-Friend, he was in first camp. Not trust him. In next camp, Kzin hiss and yowl, and Rakir break into big ritual circle and challenge. He fight big Kzin there, get mauled, but keep getting up, mauled more. Injure big Kzin bad, but still he die. Later, I think we find friend lady-Kzinti, and they help kidnap 'Chanter' Kzin. I think they use magic, but I keep watch for Durham, not listen in too close."

Rumors brought back:

  • Wtsai-Breaker is a new chieftain, so young that he hasn't earned even a half-name for himself; he won an uncertain challenge when his wtsai clove through the former chief's, and so he took the chieftaincy for himself; because of his uncertainty as a new chief, he has attached himself to the glory of the Red Cloud in a bid to ride on the rattail of success
  • the Red Cloud is attempting to negotiate with certain Mrrshan, despite old enmities; Chanter-Khym himself is a disaffected Mrrshan warrior, not really Kzin
  • there are divisions among the Kzin bands (as might be expected); Wtsai-Breaker and certain others are sympathetic to the Red Cloud; but more "conservative" Kzinti, like Sheerh-Han detest him and are looking for ways to be rid of the Red Cloud
  • per above, the Red Cloud avoided the Moot, fearing challenge or assassination-attempts, and sent Chanter-Khym as his liaison
  • (if there are others I don't remember proffering, feel free to comment below or on the Discord and the Scribes can edit this list)

The Lucre

  • 2000 dinars (gp) for capturing a prisoner--doubled, because Chanter-Khym is of higher stature than the Souffets expected
  • 1000 dinars for reporting four rumors (may be increased per note above, if other information was discovered but forgotten by the referee)
The Learning
  • 500 xp to each player-character for infiltrating the Moot
  • 400 xp for negotiating with the Kdaptists
  • 451 xp for instigating the duel with Wtsai-Breaker
  • 445 xp for the capture of Chanter-Khym

The Cut

  • 500 dinars to each player-character
250 dinars to Raoden, Gan, HanaĂ¯s, and Pako
  • 759 xp per player-character
380 xp to Raoden and Gan

(player reports, art, etc. representing this session will earn a player-character 100 xp per level)

A Call to Arms: To Snoop the Moot

The mood in the Dual-Cities is mixed. There is excitement for the Feasts of Investiture of the newly elected Souffets, who will soon see Cothon-Gadeed into the new solar year (post upcoming). And yet, there is also trepidation, as it is unfortunately at this time of year that the nomadic tribes of Kzinti typically have their Moot outside the Necropolis of the Tel, where the clans gather, the warriors give boast, and their strange priests and greatest warriors descend into the crypts themselves for strange rites. And so they have come, a horde of dagger-fanged, wtsai-wielding warriors and their harems and coffles of slaves and herds of hma and other beasts, trampling the ground outside the holy temenos of the dead, and filling the night with campfires, the hissing chants of Kzin epics, and yowling boasts and flytings.

At this hour—under the shadow of the Red Cloud and his threat of war—the idea of a Moot of Kzinti within half a day’s march of the Dual-Cities’ walls fills everyone with trepidation, and the watch has been tripled on the ramparts, and the fighting-societies have been called to lend aid to the soldiers of the cities, the Poor Brothers of the Dead, and the Knights Pylaea.

So it is that a new mission has been proposed: that certain barbarian volunteers enter secretly into the camp of the Kzinti, and see if they can discover anything about the plans of the Red Cloud, or perhaps even kidnap or assassinate leaders of import.

It is known that the founding members of the Survivors of the Tel were once victims of the strange rites that took place within the Necropolis during the last Great Moot, now two years past. As a citizen and iqtadar, Sesel himself was asked by the outgoing Souffets to see if he could gather a force to do this thing (even if he could not go, he could lend his persuasive voice in gathering a band of the barbarians so often going-and-coming to the Tel al Safina)

There will of course be hefty remunerations for any who dare undertake this risky mission. The Souffets are close-lipped as to the exact nature of such rewards—details are to be provided for those (if any) who answer the call.

For purposes of the game and scheduling, the Moot will end around the weekend of the 17th. If a company cannot be assembled by then, it will be assumed that no consensus was reached and no attempt made to infiltrate the Moot before it breaks up.

Session #90: A Clawhold in the Wilderness

[written by Phil, who ran this session ... in early October--thanks, Dad!]

Another bright winter's day illuminates the Dual Cities! Five days past, a rather large host of barbarians had been seen departing the Dual Cities through the Mourners' Gate, heading east along the Pallbearers' Way. The reason for their “expedition” was unclear, but seemed to have been precipitated by a visit from Brula al'Othmani herself, to Durham, of the Ringing Anvil. Shortly after concluding what has been rumored to be a clandestine meeting within the offices of the Ringing Anvil, Durham gathered to him a group of his Wasago Renyu companions (led by Pako), and several of his most trusted barbarians acquaintances. Drinks and discussion were had at Cothon Understar as the group decided on how best to accomplish the task ahead, ostensibly bestowed upon them by the scion of bani al'Othmani. Rumors speak of “espionage”, “Red Cloud”, and a “Fort of Bugs”? And while this group set off in confident fashion, after 5 days there was still no report of their return.

During the morning of the sixth day since their departure, a cry is heard from the Mourners' Gate that Sesel Iqtador al'Saahil is approaching! However, his company seems to be without several of their original companions. Durham is missing, as is Pako. And there is no sign of Avinnia. Surely this host has finally met a foe that they cannot easily match or best – but no! For while this fellowship remains close-lipped for the most part, in time it is learned that the barbarians feel their endeavors were successful. The entire host is indeed hale and hearty, but some are busy and sequestered out of sight. And there is much serious business to discuss with Brula al'Othmani, and perhaps Lord Dalinar. Their countenances are grim, indeed.

Heretofore, the overall mass of Red Cloud's force has been reported and thought to be more of a rag-tag, fragile alliance of blood-crazed, chaotic tribes – living in tents and squalor. However, reports of this hill-fort (its construction quality and defenses), consistent patrols, and a complimentary watch-tower – as well as the discipline and armament of the garrisons, and their method of disrupting river trade – points to perhaps a different story! Is Red Cloud truly just a popular and charismatic nomad of barbaric, ignorant infamy – or is there more to the cat? Who is Red Cloud? Has anyone ever seen or interacted with Red Cloud?!

The players:

Durham, of the Ringing Anvil
Pako, Durham's trusty renyu companion
Wasago Elite (10 renyu individuals)
Sesel, voice of the Survivors, Citizen, Iqtador al'Saahil al'Shamaliy
Raoden, the librarian
Avinnia the slight
Heijo, of the Ink-Stained Hands
Najm, called “the Worm”
Fa Mei, companion of Najm
Lord Althis of Crag Keep

The lucre:

Nothing in the way of outside monetary gain would be noticeable by anyone on the street; however, intelligence was gained and reported to Brula al'Othmani, and a significant reward of dinar has been known to change hands, to whit:

The location of a sizeable, well constructed hillfort has been ascertained
(There were actually 4 tower/mounds – DM mistake)
(One of those tower/mounds – near center of north wall – was always manned with 4 K'zin)
(All other towers were manned by a mix of K'zin and humans)
The banners of Red Cloud and a K'zin engineer, known as Eater of Bugs, fly over this fort
A detailed surface map of the fort has been prepared
As well, a detailed map of the larger area was made, with notes of logistical/strategic/tactical interest

Two well-made sketches were prepared depicting the faces of two K'zin of likely importance
A. Mweep-Boss (a warrior, observed gleaning detailed records/notes and giving orders)
B. Tracker (a scruffy K'zin, perhaps equal in status with Mweep, but adept in some arcane art)

It was estimated that the fortress is garrisoned with the following (at least):
A. 15 K'zin warriors (not including superiors)
B. 30 Human warriors
C. 1 massively huge human (but signs of at least 1 more)

Weapons observed included the following:
A. Each tower/mound has two (2) freely rotating ballistae
B. Most of the K'zin appeared to be unarmed, but were adorned with heavy leather skins
C. The humans appeared to be armed with a variety of swords/hammers/slings
D. The humans were armed in both leathers and chain

It was also surmised how river trade has been recently disrupted, via an ingenious contraption

The learning:

For the map of the fort - 2000 gold dinar (2000 xp)

For the intelligence concerning the garrison – 2000 gold dinar (2000 xp)

For intelligence as to how river trade has been disrupted – 1000 gold dinar (1000 xp)

For the detailed map of the region, with notes – 1000 gold dinar (1000 xp)

For “Wanted Posters” of Mweep and Tracker – 1000 gold dinar (1000 xp)

The cut:

XP =
1167 each player character (Durham, Sesel, Avinnia, Heijo, Najm, Althis)
585 each to Pako, Raoden, and Mei
250 to each of the Wasago Elite

Total cash from rewards =
1000 gold dinar to each character (Durham, Sesel, Avinnia, Heijo, Najm, Althis)
250 gold to Pako, Raoden, and Mei
25 gold to each of the Wasago Elite

((What in the world is Pako going to do with such wealth??!))

((After Avinnia's report, it can be surmised that Fort Eater of Bugs is on high alert – especially considering how the K'Zin called “Mweep” and “Tracker” behaved in her presence.))

Session #88: All Along the Watchtower

 an account

Of Patrols and Watch Towers in the Wilderness

A glorious winter's day falls upon the dual cities! Five days after departing through the Mourners' Gate, and marching east along the Pallbearers' Way, a company of trail-weary militia returned through that same gate – whole and in good spirits – but not alone! In short order rumors began to fly through the cities, and a coherent tale coalesced around this long patrol.

Brula Othmani and Paalavi al'Urens reported to the city officials that they had successfully ambushed a squad of Red Cloud's raiders, and then destroyed a watch-tower, located in the wilderness, upriver by about a mile from the bridge laying across the eastern river flowing to Al Agadrein. Among the Othmani and al'Urens warriors, and the several barbarians who had joined this adventure, were several prisoners who had been taken after the skirmish at the tower. Brula Othmani presented those prisoners to the council, as well as two additional spoils of note: a war banner bearing Red Cloud's ostentatious markings, and a lesser banner ostensibly representing one of Red Cloud's lieutenants – Eater of Bugs. Certainly there is more, much more, to be learned of this new K'zin warlord!

It is also said that during her debriefing, Brula (a well known and highly respected captain in the Knights Pylaea), had harsh words for the Soufets. She made special note that her force, with the help of various barbarians, had easily overcome a paltry patrol and a minimal garrison. However, that garrison had been in control of a well-built, and well-fortified watch-tower, of new construction. And her intelligence communiques (which she claims to be credible) had indicated a much larger force – perhaps as many as several full companies – is likely still at large in the wilderness of that area, playing havoc with river travel and trade. If the Soufets could not see how Red Cloud was gathering more bandits and raiders to his bloodthirsty cause, and encroaching upon the lands claimed by the cities – if they could not understand that the scourge of Red Cloud was actually upon their doorstep, and not just “threatening war” but actively engaged in the same – then they were indeed blind, ignorant dotards, drunk on years of complacency, corruption, and greed! Clerks who had been in the debriefing whisper in awe how Brula showed obvious disdain toward the Soufets, that she was full of ire and contempt as she made her report, and before storming out (without their leave) she literally spat on the ground at the feet of the Soufets!

But the talk in the Kantor ale-house – where many of the Othmani and al'Urens men-at-arms spend their hard-earned dinars on wine, women, and song – the tales of their latest excursion gravitate toward boisterous stories of Lars, a barbarian known as “Gar-Rider”, and a slick-talking, feisty fisherman named as Najm “the Worm”. It is told how Lars – howling like a pack of diseased yekkis – leaped into the confused fray of their ambush, and wielding his great weapon, lopped off the arm of a bandit AND the head of a K'zin warrior! But even more astonishingly, Lars is said to have bested a K'zin champion while chained to a post, barefoot, wearing naught but his leather breeches – and armed only with a blunt knife! Surely if Lars were to enter the arenas for gladiatorial matches he would draw huge crowds and his successes would fill the pockets of bettors to overflowing with gold dinars aplenty! Of Najm, a mere fisherman, they speak in amused wonder. With sly goading and glib talk, it was he who convinced the K'zin to challenge Lars (and we know how that ended!). And they speak also of a bolt of pure energy, loosed from the Worm's hand, that turned another K'zin warrior (Mr. Douglas by name) and his sergeant into charred and ashy corpses. Certainly these barbarians are worthy to be called “Big Damn Heroes”! HUZZAH – HUZZAH!! The cheers are so loud in the Kantor they shiver dust from the rafters!

And so, aside from Brula al'Othmani, and Paalavi al'Urens (and their company of 20 militia) the players in this episode include:

Durham, of the Ringing Anvil

Pako, Durham's trusty renyu companion

Lars, known as the Gar-Rider

Sesel, voice of the Survivors, Iqtador al'Saahil al'Shamaliy

Raoden (a librarian?)

Heijo of the Ink-Stained Hands

Najm, called “the Worm”

The Lucre:

Very little of loose change, trinkets, and baubles was gleaned from this expedition, aside from knowledge; however the following was recovered (or paid), to whit -

A total bounty for the heads of each bandit under Red Cloud's banner (total 1800 gold dinars)

A mercenary fee of 250 gold dinar, paid to each barbarian (total 1,750 gold dinar)

9 sets of serviceable chain armor (total 360 gold dinar)

7 sets of serviceable leather armor (total 140 gold dinar)

3 sets of serviceable leather armor sized for K'zin warriors (total 75 gold dinar)

7 sturdy short swords (total 49 gold dinar)

8 sturdy war hammers (total 40 gold dinar)

1 sturdy great sword (total 15 gold dinar)

Loose pocket change from 24 bandits (total 50 gold dinar, 75 silver dirhams, 116 copper fals)

2 decks of well-used playing cards (total 2 gold dinar)

3 sets of “gaming bones” (total 1 gold dinar, 5 silver dirhams)

3 large sealed/fused ceramic “pots” (roughly the size of a grapefruit – basic ballista ammo)

16 small sealed/fused “pots” (can be thrown or tossed using a sling)

1 well-made horn of bronze (if sold – total of 10 gold dinar)

The Learning:

In general (for loot, value of items, etc.) – 4350 xp

From successful and nearly flawless ambush of patrol – 1000 xp

From discovery of the watch tower and survey of nearby area – 2000 xp

From the the glorious challenge of Lars and Young Ben – 1000 xp

From the cunning use of several spells and special items – 1000 xp

From defeating the tower garrison – 3000 xp

From capturing prisoners alive – 800 xp

The Cut:

Both Houses Othmani and al'Urens have already taken their cut of the spoils and so is not included in the above “lucre list” (a few sets of armor, some of the weapons and ammo, all of the prisoners, and one of the horns); what is left is divvied out among the characters (assuming all items except the ballista and sling “pots” are sold – and in this instance, the DM is awarding Pako a full share!):

XP = 1879 each character (excluding Pako)

Mercenary fee to each character = 250 gold dinar

Total cash from loot to each character = 361 gold dinar, 18 silver dirhams, 22 copper fals

Characters should decide what to do with the horn, ballista and sling “pots”

A Call to Arms:

A Campaign To Blacken Red Cloud's Eye!

Those who keep eyes and ears attuned to certain goings-on - will have observed a recent occurrence. A young, well-dressed gentleman entered the Ringing Anvil asking to speak with Durham. The fellow bore the sigil of House al Urens upon his baldric. Those who keenly follow the politics of the great cities recognized the gentleman as Johannes Blanke, whispered to be the confidant of Booster Kayton (advisor to Dalan al Urens - Patriarch of Banu al Urens). Banu al Urens is known for their bend toward martial affairs, and are well known to provide arms-men to protect the city walls. Initial whispers were that the Ringing Anvil might be in for a lucrative weapons/armor contract, or perhaps Durham is being asked to an audience at Banu al Urens to discuss fortifications (after all, he is know to be an architect), or it may be that Durham and his fellow barbarians are once again embroiled in another lawsuit!

Yet, none of these things are true. In fact, word goes out from the Ringing Anvil! Durham has sent urchins out, scuttling to various local dives and regular haunts of barbarians and adventurers – seeking comrades to join in a tussle with a large contingent of Red Cloud's raiders. HA! Rather a suicide mission, some say. As this word is spread, it also becomes known that Brula Othmani, of Banu Othmani, and her personal guard, will lead this martial expedition. And under her banner, Paalvi bint Dalan al-Aasimah (also called “Secondborn”), of Banu al Urens, and her personal guard, will also march.

It would seem that the exploits of Durham, and his companions has reached the ears of Dalan al Urens, Patriarch of Banu al Urens – against the akho, with the Wasago renyu, against the pirates, and the winning of the Darkwing – but most importantly, their success in freeing the merchants being abused by Red Cloud's slaving party. Bold adventures, and honorable. Banu al Urens has hired Durham – and that is why the urchins have been seen scampering about the city – advertising Durham's call to arms – to help further bloody the nose or blacken the eye of Red Cloud! To help bring this expedition to a successful conclusion – Durham offers glory, and gold! Yet, aside from glory, and some unnamed recompense, there is the potential for pillaging the offending force (Othmani and al Urens will lay no claim to the spoils), the great thanks of the city and the Souffets, as well as the well-known fact that various small Houses (al Luz, Farawla, Othmani and al Urens) have combined their wealth and are offering a sum of 75 dinar for the head of each Red Cloud warrior laid low!

What say you, adventurers?! Do you have what it takes to protect the innocent citizens, your neighbors and friends – the men, women, and children – of Cothon-Gadeed? Will you help eradicate this pitiful scourge?! What say you?!!?

The Red Cloud would smile
if he knew what's coming

Session #76: Rescue and Realization

[written by Phil, who ran the session--thanks, Dad!]

Word has circulated lately in the streets of Cothon-Gadeed, spread by a small group of battered survivors, concerning the loss of a major caravan. They told of being taken unaware during their last night camping, only a day's travel south of the dual cities, and attacked by a large band of brigands, composed of K'Zin and humans. They described the chaos of being overrun while sleeping, many killed, and their caravan destroyed and looted. During the fight and confusion, they escaped, but also witnessed several friends and companions being taken prisoner, ostensibly to be used as slaves – or worse. One common thread in each survivor's tale is the recollection of hearing the marauders yelling praises to Red Cloud.

Their tales fell upon the ears of General Dalinar, of House al Khalid, who surmised that the K'Zin warlord, Red Cloud, was behind this raid. Worse yet was that a certain merchant captain, Ilasha, had been one of those taken captive. Rumors have it that she was acting as a diplomatic envoy for the General, and may have been carrying vital information with respect to the General's campaign against Red Cloud. However, due to local politics, quick action from the city seemed hobbled, and General Dalinar sent word out to various local entities, via his steward Teleb, requesting their assistance in locating and dealing with this band of brigands. While Teleb seemed to favor annihilation of this raiding party, the General had suggested that the primary objective should be liberating the captives (especially Ilasha), and retrieving any diplomatic materials in her possession.

This call to action was quickly answered by a small group of jaunty, well known, barbarian adventurers. And so, this motley crew was observed to set out from Cothon-Gadeed one early morning with hopes of an easy rescue playing in their minds, with perhaps some reconnaissance tossed in, and certainly the promise of reward in the mix!

Citizen Sesel, from the northern Iqta al Saahil (fighter 8)

Durham, of the Ringing Anvil (fighter 7)

(accompanied by his stalwart renyu companion, Pako)

Heijo of the Ink-Stained Hands (spellcaster 6)

Raoden (spellcaster 5)

Revna the Odd (spellcaster 5)

Najm the fisherman (spellcaster 5)

Arngeir of the Green Gleam (fighter 5)

This band of eight adventurers departed early on a sunny morning, heading south, their spirits high. By nightfall they had not returned, and the worst was feared. At dawn of the following day, a rag-tag group of individuals arrived at the gates of the cities, claiming to be survivors of the waylaid caravan – taken captive by a band of K'Zin and human brigands. They were bruised, battered, and bloodied, and recounted to the authorities a tale of being set free during the night by a handful of mercenaries (our stalwart heroes?!). They initially fled east through the forest, while a forest fire began raging to their west, yet their saviors did not immediately follow. However, not long after reaching the caravan track, they were joined by the mercenaries, and a quick pow-wow was held. Their group of merchants was gathered under the leadership of Ilasha (she survived!), given weapons, and ordered to quick-march to safety. And as they departed north toward the city, the barbarians melted once more into the darkness of the forest – back in the direction of the conflagration and the band of brigands. Of their fate, these survivors knew no more.

Yet lo! By sunset of that same day the adventuring band had all returned to the city as well! They did not return all at once, but straggled in by degrees. First came Durham and Pako, somewhat disheveled and beaten, asking about Ilasha and the fate of those who had been released. Arngeir followed a few hours later, telling of a grisly skirmish early during the night previous (with a handful humans and a certain K'Zin calling itself “Firstborn”). Finally, the remaining fellowship dragged themselves through the city gate late in the day, making their way to the common room of Cothon-Understar. But even as they told of performing a daring rescue, their countenance was grim, and they spoke of a horror that surpassed anything they had yet encountered.

Under order from General Dalinar, Teleb was dispatched to hear their tale, and as they spoke, a new respect for these barbarians crept over him. He, as well as a large crowd of hangers-on, listened as they told of the skirmish, the ferocity of the K'Zin, freeing the captives, and then tracking the remaining brigands through the darkness, toward the east.

Tracking during the night was difficult, and they feared being caught in an ambush. But as the sun rose anew they found themselves at the edge of the forest, just outside of iqta al Zaytun, still not having overtaken the brigands. And it was here where the true horror fell upon them. They gazed out across a massive vineyard (one that was once well kept and productive), toward the iqta that sprawled along a river's edge. But the vineyard was no more – all was ravaged, burned, and razed – with rotting bodies of humans and ranch-beasts [hmelas and hmas especially ~the Scribes], sprinkled haphazardly among the churned up fields. Carrion creatures [winged gerednya and giriku, as well as packs of lupine gadhars, no doubt ~the Scribes] feasted quietly upon the carcasses, but other signs of life were lacking.

A reconnaissance of the iqta itself revealed several hundred corpses in varying states of decay – many disemboweled and hacked to pieces, some hung by the feet from nearby trees, and even a few crucified to doors and walls. Most disturbingly, every head had been severed from the bodies, and were found stacked in a large pile in the center of the iqta. Many good, fine, hard-working people had been slaughtered here and literally left to rot. The dwellings of the iqta also lay in ruins – most of the buildings pillaged and left now as empty, burnt shells. No sign of the raiding party could be discerned. But Sesel was certain that while the small band of brigands must have come through here, it had to have taken an army of many hundreds (if not thousands!) to have rained this destruction down upon iqta Zaytun. Indeed, if this was the work of Red Cloud, then his force was overwhelming, and his might was daunting! War was not looming as a threat – it was here, now, and close.

The Lucre:

While there was not a large amount of loot/baubles recovered, there were some items of note -

  1. 2 finely forged and crafted hand axes (each +1 to dam, 200 dinars each)

  2. 1 finely forged and crafted great sword (taken from Firstborn, +1 to dam, 1000 dinars)

  3. Items found by the party while scavenging the caravan

    1. A small, uniquely marked (with a rose inlaid with silver), and well-made chest containing:

      1. 83 mithqals (pp), 1288 dinars (gp), 820 dirhams (sp), and 523 fals (cp)

      2. A small pouch made of fine silk, with an embroidered purple rose design (10 dinars) containing:

        1. A gold necklace hung with 7 star garnets (1210 dinars)

        2. A heavy gold ring set with a single star garnet (470 dinars)

  4. Items found by the party while scavenging iqta al Zaytun

    1. Small pouch containing 12 dinars, 52 dirhams, and 20 fals

    2. Small pouch containing 92 dinars, 55 dirhams, and 27 fals

    3. Small pouch containing 4 uncut gemstones (484 dinars, 245 dinars, 51 dinars, 20 dinars)

    4. 5 long swords (5 dinars each – damaged, but Ringing Anvil can repair for full value)

    5. 3 chain shirts (20 dinars each – damaged, but Ringing Anvil can repair for full value)

The Learning:

From discovering the remains of the caravan – 1000 XP

From tracking the K'Zin raiding party – 1000 XP

From treasure – 8500 XP

From freeing Ilasha – 5000 XP

From recovering other captives alive – 12000 XP

From battling the K'Zin raiding party – 3500 XP

From discovering the destruction of iqta Zaytun – 2500 XP

From use of spells and skills – 5000 XP

Total = 38500 XP

The Cut:

Some items will be difficult for the DM to parcel out. The monetary value of gems and jewels is dependent on whether they are sold or kept (again – this must be decided upon by the group, and a buyer will have to be found). The small chest, in particular, stands out, having a unique design/crest of a rose inlaid with silver – the question is, what will the party do with this chest and its contents? Hmm? Please let either myself or Cullen know what you intend to do with the following items:

  1. the chest and all of its contents (party needs to come to a consensus)

  2. the uniquely crafted hand axes and great sword

Outside of those items, the split will be:

210 gold dinar per character (including Pako and Raoden)

13 silver dirhams per character (including Pako and Raoden)

13 copper fals per character (including Pako and Raoden)

Concerning XP:

5000 XP to Durham, Sesel, Heijo, and Revna

4500 XP to Arngeir and Najm (for joining the expedition late)

2500 XP to Raoden

None of the items recovered are magical.

A Scream and Leap to Arms!

-- The Kzinti Are Coming --

[written by Phil, player of Bartholomew Pettibone, calling adventurers in the city to be ware the Red Cloud's coming ...]

This is a call for players available to join in a game against the Kzinti before 26 May.

News has been trickling in to Cothon-Gadeed about groups of K'Zin bandits coalescing and terrorizing the hinterlands. A red-tailed comet burns in the night sky. And the rise of a self-styled “mighty K'Zin warlord” has been a conversational topic throughout the Dual Cities – especially on those lips of K'Zin origin! This warlord calls himself the Red Cloud, after that same comet, and has been hinted at as the instigator of several wilderness skirmishes. While he has not (as yet) claimed responsibility for those sorties, it is known that he is calling for K'Zin (and human!) tribal groups to answer his call – to build an army of extraordinary magnitude for liberation and conquest! Furthermore, over recent years, it has been noted that the K'Zin have been infiltrating and desecrating the catacombs of the Necropolis, in search of ancient artifacts of war, buried with powerful historical figures, and often forgotten or neglected over centuries of time.

While these rumors and discussions have led to heated debates within the Dual Cities, little has been done to quell the concerns of the citizens. Political power struggles have stymied any potential actions to thwart Red Cloud. However, it appears that the powder kegs of politics and war are about to ignite and burst forth upon the land, whether the people want that or not! It has been confirmed that in recent months at least two small iqta's have been razed and pillaged. And more recently, the outpost fort in the Tukayyat hills was infiltrated, its Captain brutally murdered, a protected artifact stolen, and its library burned to ashes. Word has it that K'Zin appear to be responsible for all of these attacks.

In confirmation of these woeful tidings, a rag-tag group of four refugees (bloodied, beaten, and bruised) have stumbled to the gates of the Iqta' al Saahil al Shamaliy, pressing the newly minted citizen, Sesel of the Survivors, to provide them a safe haven. They report that their caravan, traveling to Cothon-Gadeed, was set upon by a large band of 40 – 50 bandits, only a few hours march east from Sesel's iqta'! They relate the horrors of being taken by surprise the night previous, ambushed and overrun in the dark by both K'Zin and human warriors. Even though it was dark, and the chaos and confusion were overwhelming, they are certain that these bandits were being led by K'Zin, and they report hearing the human warriors extolling that “Red Cloud has blessed us this night – we can only be victorious!” The wagons of the caravan were broken up and burned, easily carried valuables were stolen, food-stuffs were carried away or scattered to the wind, a good number of their fellows were savagely murdered, and several were taken prisoner (ostensibly to serve as slaves). One of the prisoners taken by the bandits (along with her goods) was one Ilasha – a respected traveling merchant dabbling in gems and jewels (who came to Cothon last year)

These caravan survivors appeal specifically to iqtadar Sesel, but also to any and all citizens and barbarians alike, to avenge them! They fear the worst for their fellows who were taken as slaves, and believe that if nothing is done, the Red Cloud will continue to rampage across the land, and perhaps this iqta' will be next – being that is so close to where the caravan was ambushed!

Who will heed their call and appeal for justice? Who will come to the aid of those taken prisoner? Who will lend their strength and arms to fight for freedom against the tyranny of the Red Cloud and their oppressive K'Zinti regime of horror and genocide? The doom is growing. The machinations of a mad-Cat is at full throttle! Action is needed!

From Bartholomew's Journals: Treachery and Disaster!

[written by Phil, player of Bartholomew Pettibone, about a "Special Episode" that was played 22 April; despite and because Bart was not directly involved, I offered an award of 150 xp per level for the in-character report of rumors, and thus Bart has earned this award]

Treachery at Tukayyat!

While I have been studying and completing various research projects, here in Bob Hall, I have begun to hear stories and rumors of terrible things. Gan has been in town recently, visiting his sweetie, and has brought me this news:

Word has been spreading in Cothon-Gadeed about a recent attack on a particular Tukayyat hill fort, not too far off in the wilderness, northwest of the dual cities. Many claim, and it is the official word, that it was bandits – merely attempting to make off with several head of the prized chlen herd maintained in that area. However, others have heard more dire rumors.

Reports have begun leaking into public knowledge that the Captain of the guard at Fort Tukayyat (and his squire) were found alone in the forest, slaughtered. It is also rumored that the library of the fort was burned to smoldering ash, a particular artifact has gone missing, and a “trusted” initiate has disappeared. Some are saying this reeks of treachery, infiltration, and guerrilla war tactics by none other than the K'Zin war chief Red Cloud!

Indeed, Gan learned that the mangled body of a well-respected military captain (Lord Icar) was found in the forest nearby the hill fort, his face literally ripped off, and his weapons and armor missing; his squire was found crushed to death nearby. Yes – crushed to death! As well, a particular artifact (the shards of a broken “lance”?), and a certain initiate of the Confraternity of St. Inistas (Sister Kyssa) have gone missing. Furthermore, I have learned that a clerk of the Confraternity was found disemboweled in his chambers, and the library at the fort was most certainly turned into a conflagration (sad to lose such knowledge!). Perhaps the missing initiate was a traitor from within?! Finally, Gan related that in the area around where the bodies of the two military personnel were found, unidentified sources claimed that massive claw marks were noted on several trees, and a particular name carved into a tree trunk was identified – a K'Zinti name: His-Right-Hand-Is-Open!

More general rumors say that Red Cloud has been active throughout the north and west, with his bands of wild K'Zin burning and pillaging isolated farm villages. Small, scattered groups of refugees have been entering Cothon-Gadeed as of late, telling horrible stories of hordes of large cat-like demons descending on their freeholds, wantonly killing all in their way, stealing away herd animals, and leaving a scorched wasteland in their wake. These refugees have begun petitioning the great Houses to do something, but so far their pleas have fallen on deaf ears – except when it comes to one Warlord Dalinar of House Bani al Khalid.

Many of the great Houses, and the High Council, have claimed that these are only rumors, that there is no approaching war with the wild K'Zin (that's utter nonsense – they were crushed ages ago!), and the tales of murder and mayhem are but scare tactics being blown out of proportion by hyperbolic political rivals. However, Warlord Dalinar has made public claims that indeed, there is no “approaching” war – war is already upon Cothon-Gadeed! Keen observers have even noted that soon after the news of the raid on Tukayyat began circulating, a small contingent of emissaries from the Confraternity of St. Inistas made contact with House Bani al Khalid, and had private discussions with Warlord Dalinar.

Has war with the K'zin truly started? What might this mean for the city and her inhabitants? What about the far-flung iq'tas that lay outside of the city proper – are they safe, can they be properly defended, or will they follow a similar fate as Tukayyat and others? What, exactly, is Red Cloud up to?! Warlord Dalinar has made calls to action in the past, and none have heeded – is Cothon-Gadeed doomed?

The Red Cloud of War

Smoke rises southeast of Cothon-Gadeed, from the burning villages and vineyards of the Iqta' al Zaytun--clouds of smoke stained red with the light of the great red sun. The people of the Dual Cities tell each other on the streets, this must be the reason for his name--the Red Cloud, newly risen warlord of the Kzinti, master of Heroes, destroyer of Peace. Or so they tell each other as they meet in the streets, shaking their heads.

And all look to the strong walls of both Cothon and Gadeed, the masterwork fortifications of both klackon and human hands--and the great turrets that stand above, manned by retainers of the Guilds and the Bani-Houses, and the elite Knights Pylaea--and all hope and pray that it will not come to such War as it once did, between Man and Kzin, when the very walls shook under the fury of the Kzinti and their engines. But those days are over--those are the days of legend, of history--such days cannot now come!

And too, people whisper about the Souffets--after their refusal to join with the Hanse in their campaign against the pirates of the eastern seas; after their recall and snubbing of the great general Dalinar al Khalid, and suspicions against him--given all this, can Khosroa and Fadhlan be expected to muster any real resistance against the Red Cloud in this, their final lunar year in office? And they've already dithered these two months!

(
"Gadeed will fall!"
There will be an upcoming post detailing a way for player-characters to explain just what they have been up to in the "downtime" between January and now (going into April), given that the life of the Dual-Cities has been somewhat on hold during that time.)

Such is the talk in the streets these days, as refugees straggle in from al Zaytun with tales of Kzinti coming in out of the night, burning everything with their peculiar yowling hunting cries, cutting men down with claw, fang, and wtsai ... How could the Red Cloud of gathered such strength to himself already, to feel ready to challenge Cothon-Gadeed so directly?? The Iqta' al Zaytun is a breadbasket of the Cities, supplying olives, wine, oil, and all manner of corn and other foodstuffs. How could this upstart warlord already have mustered such force?

[Even the referee is surprised at this turn of events!--how indeed could the Red Cloud of come into such power? Well, it is "convenient" at least for the Scribes ... who can thus claim their lack of proper chronicling has been due more to their duties regarding this sudden onslaught, rather than having to attend to a greater number of personal matters in these last few months ...

... And rest assured, this is no moment like the apocryphal event in Dave Arneson's Blackmoor game when, after the players had spent too many sessions delving in the dungeons and neglecting the wargame proper, the cackling Arneson gleefully told his players that the baddies had won--no, the Red Cloud has not won in any sense! But perhaps he has at least shown himself to be a force to be reckoned with ...]

Another Wargame: The Red Cloud Dawn

(I spent my day working on an art-project/rules-pastiche of a wargame)

The Red Cloud has attacked the south-eastern iqta' al-Zaytun!

Though the dreaded Kzin Hero's raids have been consistently bloody and destructive, this most recent attack against al-Zaytun mustered enough Kzinti and auxiliaries to meet the defenders of the iqta' in open battle, wtsai-to-spear. Entire zayt-orchards burned, acrid smoke smearing the sky even as the blood of men stained the soil, and the Kzinti advanced even against the Tower Qutnai.

Rumors of the depredations of the Red Cloud, a Kzinti Hero of Prophecy waging a renewed war against mankind in the southern iqtas and baldan of Gadeed, have been filtering up to the Dual-Cities for months. His band of Heroes have flouted the old Peace agreed after the last Man-Kzin War; instead of peacefully driving their sthondat and bazhianya herds, hunting vatach and foraging for zheerekti, they have embarked on quite a different ship of destiny--a violent destiny, attempting to realize the prophecy of the Red Cloud's return in an orgy of blood.

Named for the red celestial phenomenon that appears in the sky every other solar cycle--the first appearance of which this cycle was sighted again on the very night of his First Naming--the eponymous Hero took up the Name, redded his sword in the blood of a captive human warrior, and swore that Cothon-Gadeed would at last fall to the Kzinti and the Aegis of the Demon-Queen, ushering in a new age of redolence under himself as the Patriarch-Restored.

Or so say those traders who had traffic with the Kzinti before the outbreak of violence. To those who know their history, this is surely just another outbreak of banditry by the nomadic Kzinti, to be put down in due time by combined might of the Ten Cities League. Since the last peace, every lunar decade or so, some Hero proclaims himself the new Patriarch, sworn to overthrow the human empire, and to reunite Kzin and Mrrshan; but the learnéd know that the Mrrshan will never accept another Patriarch, and even the unlettered masses know that Dalinar al Khalid, victor already in two such Man-Kzin bandit-wars, will surely defy the Souffets' recall and muster troops to crush these insolent Kzinti once again.

And yet ... for those whose history goes deeper, there is always that fear: that this time, some spark will truly light in the spirits of the Kzinti; that the warrior-bands, divided by their petty honor-duels and envies, will actually believe in the Prophecy of this Hero, and follow him to glory; that the decadence of the Decapolis and the jealousies of the Souffets, and all the divisions of modern man, will conspire together to see to it that the hegemony of humankind falters and fails again ...

Ignore the planes--the only playing cards I had were my old "WWII Spotter Cards"

It will take a strong arm and a prudent eye to see Cothon-Gadeed through to victory in this new Red Cloud's War.

(the rules are half-written/composed, and I hope I can cajole one you players out there to play through with me; and with more scenarios as I get ahold of more maps I don't have to draw)
