Session #35: Pirating Pirates

[It has been some weeks since this expedition set out (13 May was the day of it!), and the scribes apologize for the long wait; they beg indulgence of the followers of these chronicles, especially seeing that chief among the scribes is related to the ailing Kayl minal Muluk]

Following up on their previous successful expeditions, a group of fresh barbarian-adventurers, seeking to emulate the glories and successes of the Survivors of the Tel, gathered in one of the harbor front taverns to discuss fresh plans.

Arngeir the urchin professed a curiosity as to what it was about the Weirding Caverns that gave them their name? But the rest of the company was more interested in what seemed a surer avenue to wealth as proposed by Dehuhada: why not plunder the plunder of the pirates rumored to lurk in the sea caves of Ocean's Throat?

With their goal set, Arngeir set out into the fischmarkt by the Kantor and with his recently earned lucre purchased outright a panga fishing-boat. For it was then the talk all through the taverns that the Barcidae of the Dyers' Migdol were claiming outrageous tolls for passage up the beach. So, collecting the party at the waterfront, they all piled into the long boat, and with Arngeir at the tiller, the rest took their places at the oars. They departed through the harbor rowing north along the coast and cliffs, braving the rain and hard seas.

  • Dehuhada (fighting-man 1)
  • Arngeir (fighting-man 1)
  • Chad (fighting-man 1)
  • Stavros (fighting-man 1)
  • Persephone (fighting-woman 4)
    accompanied by Finbar (renyu)

As they had departed, so the company returned, much drenched with rain and a little blood, but eager to sell their loot. It was impossible to hide what they had taken from the curious eyes of the fishmongers, netmakers, sail-sewers, and others who lingered in the harbor as the adventurers' panga crunched up onto the sandbar reserved for poorer fishermen. But what was also clear was that Stavros had been badly mauled--perhaps by a Kzin?--and had to be carried out of the boat and to his quarters. Only Sakkra blood had saved him, it was said.

Having set out without any hirelings, it was easy enough for the company to keep the details quiet, but some information nevertheless came forth: they had indeed gone in through certain sea caves, and crept through the caverns to sneak up on the rumored piratical hideout. A battle against guards had gone their way, though Stavros was left standing afterward only because of copious Sakkra blood and his own adrenaline. Persephone was heard to remark that it would have been a simpler affair if anyone of magical talents had been along.

Ultimately, as evidenced by the plunder they returned with, the company had not raided any treasure-ship or treasury, but had ransacked well-appointed quarters--as if they had raided a captain's quarters?
